When Eva Schadewald needed community service hours for her sorority, Delta Zeta, at Ohio Northern University, she turned to the Ada Public Library. A civil engineering student from Port Clinton, Ohio, Eva is a huge fan of science fiction adventure books.
“I love reading and I love books,” she says, noting she was a frequent patron of her school’s library growing up. “And, of course, the library always needs volunteers.”
Eva spends about four to five hours each week assisting the librarians. She often prepares craft materials for children’s story hour, and she once completely reorganized the craft storage closet—a methodical task involving sorting and strategizing that was perfect for her engineer’s mind.
As a first-year student, Eva especially enjoys observing the children and families interact while she works. She selected her major because she wants to design and build structures that benefit communities. Being active in Ada gives her a break from academics and gives her a fresh perspective on her degree.
“I love watching the community come together at the library because everyone in Ada knows one another. I just love that small-town feel,” she said. “Volunteering makes me feel like I am part of something bigger. It’s an honor to help out this community that I’ll be calling home for the next four years.”
